Abstract

992,375. Hydrofoils. R. T. HEADRICK, E. E. HEADRICK, B. A. REID, R. M. McBURNEY, and P. R. MAGUIRE. Dec. 3, 1963, No. 47796/63. Heading B7A. A hydrofoil apparatus, e.g. to support a vessel in water, comprises a delta-shaped body member 50 having a longitudinal axis X-X and upper and lower surfaces 51, 52 which converge at 54 at an acute angle along the forward extent of the body member to form a pair of leading edges 53. The trailing edge 56 may be thin or thick as at 75 in Fig. 7 which illustrates the body member 70 arranged with a passage 77 for introducing a fluid, e.g. air, into the space immediately behind the body member to decrease the vacuum created in said space. In Fig. 12 the body member 100 is pivoted on a shaft 109 within a pair of depending arms of a strut 104. A damper spring 108 is connected at one end to boss 102 mounted on body member 100 and is disposed between a pair of stop-pins 110 at the other end for biasing said body member in a preselected position and for damping out oscillations. The lower surface of the body member is shown flat but may be concave or convex (Fig. 4, not shown). The Specification describes various modifications of the body member which by itself may be used as a water ski.
