Abstract

A method of making a concentrated thixotropic material comprises reacting a polyamide of a polymeric fatty acid with an epoxy or hydroxyl-containing compound under conditions conducive to esterification until the acid value of the mixture has fallen by not less than half the acid value of the mixture, the polyamide having an acid value of at least 25 mg. KOH per gram and having a molecular weight in the range 800 to 5000, the epoxy or hydroxyl-containing compound being selected from (a) hydroxyl terminated polyalkylene oxides of the general formula R(OR1)nOR2, or a tri- or tetra-hydric alcohol, one or more hydroxyl groups of which are etherified with hydroxyl terminated polyalkylene oxides, of general formula (HO)pR3(OR1)nOHm, where R is hydrogen, alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R1 is alkylene, R2 is hydrogen or hydroxyalkyl, R3 is the hydrocarbon residue of a tri- or tetrahydric alcohol, and, when R3 is the residue of a trihydric alcohol p is 0, 1 or 2 and m is (3 - p), and, when R3 is the residue of a tetrahydric alcohol p is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and m is (4 - p); (b) polyethylene or polypropylene glycols having a molecular weight of 600 to 4000; (c) aliphatic diols containing at least 4 carbon atoms separating the hydroxyl groups; (d) aliphatic monohydric alcohols; (e) partial esters of polyhydric alcohols with fatty acids, polymerized fatty acids and/or rosin acids; (f) alkyd resins containing a substantial excess of free hydroxyl over free carboxyl groups and (g) epoxidized fatty oils or alkyl esters of epoxy fatty acids. Examples are given.
