Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0960622/C1/1> in which R1 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, R5 is a hydrocarbon, oxy(polyalkylene) or poly(oxyalkylene) residue of valency n where n is an integer from 1 to 3. The compounds are prepared by reacting a tertiary-primary amine of formula <FORM:0960622/C1/2> with an unsaturated acid of formula <FORM:0960622/C1/3> The compounds are used as hardeners in epoxide resin compositions.ALSO:The invention provides a hardenable composition which comprises an epoxide resin and a compound of formula:- <FORM:0960622/C3/1> in which R1 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, R5 is a hydrocarbon, oxy(polyalkylene) or poly(oxyalkylene) residue of valency n where n is an integer from 1 to 3. The composition may contain an anhydride of a polycarboxylic acid as hardener and a minor amount of the above compound as accelerator, e.g. 0.05 to 4% by wt. of the composition. Suitable epoxide resins are polyglycidyl esters and polyglycidyl ethers. In examples compositions containing a resin obtained from epichlorhydrin and 4,41-dihydroxydipheny dimethyl-methane are described.
