991,741. Forging. D. H. PRUTTON. Oct. 15, 1963, No. 40634/63. Heading B3H. A wire article forming machine, e.g. for nail making or bolt heading, comprises punch and anvil means, means to simultaneously advance and retract said means along a path relative to each other, gripper means to advance wire stock during a portion of the advancing stroke of the anvil, means to actuate the punch and anvil to operate on the wire as they complete their strokes, wire feed means to advance the wire during retraction of the anvil and cut off means to sever a wirÞ portion during separation of the punch and anvil means. The nail making machine comprises a frame 17 on which are reciprocably journalled on cylindrical members 20 punch and anvil slides 23, 24 driven by cranks 26, 31 via rods 27, 32, a wire feed slide 38 connected by rods 39 to the punch slide 23 for reciprocation therewith and having a oneway gripper 40 and gripper dies 46 slidably mounted on the anvil slide 24. The dies 46 have head recesses 45 which act as the anvil 34 and are moved laterally of the wire axis via cams 51, 52, 49, 50 and arms 47. Cut off dies, which may also comprise pointing dies 57, are slidably mounted on the front of the die 46 and operated via cams 59 and arms 58. Operation.-With the punch and anvil members retracted the leading end of the wire which passes through guides 41, 42 is gripped by the dies 46 and the anvil slide moved forwards during which movement the gripper 40 of the feed slide 38 releases the wire and the simultaneously advancing punch heads the wire. Subsequently, the grippers 46 are opened and the punch and anvil slides retracted, the slide 24 also serving to advance the feed slide 38, the gripper 40 of which advances the wire in a second stage at the end of which the cut off or cut off and pointing dies 57 are closed to effect severing of the nail from the wire. A conventional wire straightening unit 43 may be fitted to the input side of the machine The anvil and punch members are closed for approximately 10 degrees of the machine cycle.
