Abstract

A phenol or alkyl phenol (in which the alkyl radical has 1 to 6 carbons) is made by catalytic dehydrogenation in the vapour phase of a crude mixture derived from cyclohexane or an alkyl-cyclohexane by oxidation and containing cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol or alkyl nuclear substituted derivatives of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, characterized in that the said crude mixture is washed with an alkaline solution prior to bringing it into contact with the dehydrogenation catalyst. Preferably the crude mixture is washed with an alkaline solution, vaporized, diluted with hydrogen in an amount in the range of 1 to 15 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of total cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol therein, contacted with a dehydrogenation catalyst at a temperature in the range of 250 DEG to 425 DEG C. at a liquid hourly space velocity in the range 0.3 to 2.5 and the phenol is recovered from the reaction product. The catalyst may be platinum-on-carbon, or other catalysts such as Pd, Ru, Rh, Ni or Co. The alkaline solution may be NaOH, but KOH, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, K2CO3, ethanolamine, triethanolamine, pyridine and quaternary alkyl ammonium hydroxides are also mentioned.
