Abstract
Components for nuclear reactors (such as fuel containers and structural parts designed for service at elevated temperatures up to 500 DEG C.) are made by plastically deforming particles of an alloy of the following composition: - .Zr.0.1-1.0% .Mn.0 -0.25% .Be.0 -0.01% the balance being magnesium. The plastic deformation is normally effected by extrusion and the alloy is characterized by a network of oxide films in the micro-structure. The alloy may be heat treated at at least 500 DEG C. for at least 4 hours in an atmosphere free from hydrogen and moisture or may be hydrided in hydrogen or moisture at 300-600 DEG C. with or without prior high temperature treatment and subsequent or prior rolling or forging.
