Abstract

990, 811. Measuring tension in cables. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS Ltd. Aug. 31, 1961 [June 3, 1960], No. 19723/60. Heading G1W. For measuring the tension in a cable 12 being payed out or picked up by a cable-laying ship, the downward force on a sheave 16 is transmitted, via the axle 20 mounted on a lever 21 pivoted at 22, to a load-cell 23. This is connected to a Bourdon tube 24 the movement of which is transmitted via pneumatic bellows 25, diaphragm 27 and amplifying lever system 28, to a pointer 29 the scale markings for which are calibrated to give the cable tension. The pneumatic indicating system may be tapped off to pointers (including a pen-recorder) in various parts of the ship and may also provide a signal to control elements for varying the stroke of hydraulic motors on the main winding drum 15 or the hauling-off sheave 13 to vary the drive (in picking up cable) so as to maintain the tension constant. During pay-out of the cable the motors can act as pumps to give variable braking power. Specification 990,812 is referred to.
