Abstract

A candle which burns with a coloured flame has a colour-producing substance contained in the wick and/or combustible body, which latter encloses the wick and consists of (a) a major proportion by weight of at least one polyglycol with a molecular weight above 1300, preferably 1300-4500, and a solidification point above 40 DEG C., preferably 40-55 DEG C., and (b) one or more non-polymerized or only insignificantly polymerized polyhydric alcohol, preferably glycerol or ethylene glycol, in an amount of not more than 17.5% by weight of the combustible body. The body may also contain 5-40% by weight of an oxidizing agent containing 2-5 C atoms, 1-7 O atoms and melting at 40-160 DEG C., ethyl oxamate being preferred. Boric acid, or sodium, potassium, lithium, strontium, barium or copper citrate, acetate, oxalate, formate, tartrate, malate, maleate or malonate used in conjunction with an organic acid such as citric or oxalic acid may suitably be used as the colouring agent. Incense, or other odoriferous resin or essence, e.g. silver pine oil, may also be incorporated.
