Abstract
990, 740. Artificial horizons. FERRANTI Ltd. Sept. 26, 1962 [Sept. 27, 1961], No. 34557/61. Heading G1C. [Also in Division B7] An artificial horizon includes a horizon bar 1, and a sky plate 2, in which the sky plate is coloured, the colouring being graded from a light colour at the top of the plate to a dark colour at the bottom of the plate. The horizon bar 1 is also coloured,the colouring being similarly graded from light to dark on passing from the top to the bottom of the bar. Alternatively, the horizon bar 1 may be divided into light and dark coloured areas above and below the centre line of the bar respectively. A gull wing 5 is pointed on the glass front of the instrument and the sky plate carries a roll pointer 3 traversing a fixed scale 4. The sky plate 2 is preferably of a single colour e.g. grey, and the horizon bar 1 is clearly distinguishable at all times against this plate. In further alternative arrangements the horizon bar 1 may be white, and the gull wing 5 may be omitted, flight director indexes being superimposed in front of the display.
