Abstract

990,527. Converter chimneys. STEIN & ROUBAIX. April 3, 1962 [April 12, 1961], No. 12775/62. Heading F4J. A gas collecting hood for metallurgical converters comprises an inclined spout-like -lower portion 6 of frusto-pyramidal shape, a vertical chimney portion 8 of polygonal cross-section surmounting the portion 6 and a polyhedral hopper portion 11 disposed beneath the chimney portion for collecting dust from the gases passing upwards through the portions 6 and 8, all three portions being formed from flat double-walled panels through which cooling water is circulated. The chimney portion 8 has a main outlet 10 and is connected to an emergency chimney 13 by a frustoconical skirt 14 lined with refractory material and surrounded by a separating tank 17. The chimney 13 is normally closed by a clapper 16. The double-walled panels are supported by a tubular pipe structure comprising down pipes 24 arranged around the periphery of the tank 17 and cross-braced by girdles 25 and stiffeners 26 both of tubular form. Pipes 23 convey steam and water back to the tank 17. The panels are rigidly supported at the level of girdle 25b by supports 29 and the tubular structure itself has a support 28 forming part of the steelworks building. Sliding attachment devices 30 permit expansion of the panels. A roof 20 spaced above the tank 17 has an access door 22.
