A gear mechanism for representing a planetary motion in a planetarium comprises a non-circular driving gear 1 meshing a circular driven gear 2, the axes of rotation 3, 4 of the gears being eccentrically displaced by the same amount e. Equations for determining the pitch curve of the driving wheel are given. Also specific values of the major axis 2A and minor axis 2B to represent the paths of the planets Mercury and Mars are given. The driving wheel 1 may be produced by deforming a ring gear 9 having a diameter equal to that of the driven wheel. The gear 9 is supported from an eccentricallymounted plate 5 by diametrically opposed adjusting screws 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, the screws 7, 7<SP>1</SP> being adjusted to spread the ring gear 9 to form a major axis 2A, and the screws 11, 11<SP>1</SP> being adjusted to contract the ring to form a minor axis 2B. In a modification, a driving gear is made by a rolling process employing an eccentrically journalled cutting pinion wherein the rotary motion of the cutting pinion and of the driving gear wheel to beproduced are non-uniformly controlled with respect to each other by a gearwheel complying exactly with the formula in accordance with the laws of motion of the planet to be represented.
