Abstract

A process for the purification of e -caprolactam comprises acidifying water-containing crude lactam (obtained by neutralization after Beckmann rearrangement and separation of the aqueous layer) with a non-volatile acid (e.g. H2SO4) and freeing it from water at a pH of 3-2 to 4-2 by distillation and thereafter further purifying it by rectification and/or extraction. Further water may be added to the crude lactam before distillation. Acid may be added to the crude lactam at intervals or continuously throughout the distillation to maintain the required pH.
