Abstract
The invention relates to a method of separating o -dodecalactam from the crude reaction product obtained by treating cyclododecacarboxylic acid with a nitrosylating agent in concentrated sulphuric acid or oleum, decarboxylating the nitrosocarboxylic acid to yield cyclododecanone oxime and subjecting the latter to the Beckmann re-arrangement. According to the invention, the resulting mixture of cyclododecacarboxylic acid, o -dodecalactam and sulphuric acid or oleum is diluted with water to a sulphuric acid content of 65-85% by weight, whereby the cyclododecacarboxylic acid is precipitated and the o -dodecalactam remains in solution. The lactam may then be precipitated by further diluting the solution to a sulphuric acid content of 20-30% by weight. Examples are given.
