Abstract

1309782 Purifying lactams ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970] 17448/70 Heading C2C Nitrogen-containing contaminants are removed from a crude lactam by adding from 0À01 to 5À0 wt. per cent, based on the lactam, of nitrous acid or nitrites or mixtures containing them as a diazotization agent under conditions furthering diazotization in order to convert the contaminants into products which can be physically separated from the lactam by extraction, distillation, crystallization or heating. The diazotization is suitably carried out at a temperature of from 10‹ to 40‹ C. The diazotization may be carried out at any stage of processing the crude lactam after it has been prepared by, for example, Beckmann rearrangement of the corresponding oxime.
