Abstract

989,847. Lining pipes. REDFERNS (BRADBURY) Ltd. April 19, 1963 [May 1, 1962], No. 16663/62. Heading F2P. A method of lining a metal pipe 1 with a tubular sleeve 4 comprises the steps of coating the inner surface of the pipe or the outer surface of the sleeve with an adhesive, inserting the sleeve into the pipe and fixing one end of the sleeve to the adjacent end of the pipe. A vacuum is applied to the other end of the pipe to draw a resilient plug 12 through the sleeve to progressively expand the latter into engagement with the inner wall of of the pipe. In the construction shown a gland box 6 is clipped to a flange 3 of an end of the pipe 1 to apply vacuum to that end, the joint being sealed by a gasket 10 which may be bonded to a flange 8 of the gland box. A similar gland box 14 may be provided at the end of the pipe at which the sleeve is fixed to provide a supply of compressed fluid which acts on the plug 12. The ends of the sleeve 4 forms a gasket. The plug may be frusto-conical, spherical or of other shapes having circular cross-sections and may be made of or have an external layer of rubber. The plug may also be lubricated, e.g. with soap, to facilitate its passage through the sleeve.
