Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0989755/C2/1> and their acid addition salts (including ascorbates) and quaternary ammonium salts, wherein Ar is phenyl, halophenyl, methoxyphenyl, thienyl, C1-6-alkyl-phenyl or dimethylphenyl; R is hydrogen, hydroxymethyl, C1-6-alkyl or C1-6\t -alkanoyl; Z and Z1 are the same and are hydrogen or methyl and the dotted line indicates an optional bond between the 3- and 4-positions of the piperidine nucleus. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a g -aroylpropyl halide with a 1-(4-piperidyl)-2-benzimidazolinone and, where the 3-position of the benzimidazole ring is unsubstituted, the product may be further reacted with formalin or an alkanoic acid anhydride to give the hydroxymethyl or alkanoyl derivative. 1 - (1,2,3,6 - Tetrahydro - 4 - pyridyl) - 2 - benzimidazolinones used as intermediates are prepared from 1-benzyl-3-carbethoxy-4-piperidone and an appropriate 1,2-phenylenediamine and removing the benzyl group from the 1-(1-benzyl - 1,2,3,6 - tetrahydro - 4 - pyridyl) - 2 - benzimidazolinone so formed. The 1-benzyl analogue may be reacted with an alkylating, a hydroxylating or an acylating agent to give 3-alkyl-, 3-hydroxyalkyl- and 3-alkanoyl-analogues.
