A scale for a measuring instrument carries both a conventional set of spaced graduations and also, by its side, a binary-coded pattern the physical arrangement being such that when the measuring instrument pointer 3a, Fig. 1, is photographed the adjacent coded-pattern 2 will provide a "coarse" indication of the position of the instrument pointer and the position of the pointer with respect to the adjacent scale graduations 4a will provide a "fine" indication. Such a scale is said to be useful for instruments such as theodolites where readings made in the field can be photographed and analysed at a central office. A system for reading "fine" indication on the record shown in Fig. 1 is; described (Fig. 13 not shown) in which by scanning the strips 3 and 4 photo-electrically and synchronously producing clock-pulses pulse counts are produced which represent the distances a and b shown in the Figure. The quotient of these two distances gives the required "fine" measurement.
