988,961. Mowing machines. G. A. FAIRBAIRN. Jan. 20, 1964 [Jan. 30, 1963], No. 3750/63. Heading A1F. Relates to a mower of the kind having a transverse bar 10 with sprockets 13, 32 mounted one at each end for rotation about parallel horizontal axes, an endless cutting- chain 29 being entrained around both sprockets to provide upper and lower flights 28a, 28b in juxtaposed cutting relationship, the sprocket 13 at the inner end of the bar being driven continuously unidirectionally. According to the invention, the upper chain-flight 28a moves inwardly and the outer sprocket 32 has its lower side aligned with the lower flight so that the latter moves in a rectilinear path, there being fixed crop-cutting members 50, 51 coacting with this flight adjacent to the sprocket 32 so that crop will be prevented from being carried around the sprocket and will also be cut in the region where the two flights separate. The general construction of the machine is similar to that disclosed in Specification 962,169, with a box-like outer shoe 9 which houses the sprocket 32, the difference being that the lower chain-flight 28b now runs towards the sprocket 32 so that the fixed cutting edges 50, 51 which co-operate with the chain now co-operate with the lower flight. In addition, a fixed member 67 is arranged in wiping contact with the upper chain-flight (Fig. 4) at the opposite end of the bar 10 to prevent cut crop being carried around the driving sprocket 13. As in Specification 962,169, the bar 10 includes a hollow channel-section housing 25, within which the chain 29 runs.
