Abstract
<FORM:0988781/C6-C7/1> Molten metal is degassed, to remove occluded gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, in a vacuum tank formed by two halves pivotally separable along a parting line extending and with separation increasing from the lower to the upper extremity of the tank for receiving a container, e.g. a ladle, of the molten metal. As shown in Fig. 1, the halves may be symmetrical, one 11 being fixed, the other 12 being pivotable about a pivot 13. The half 12 may be opened by means of a hydraulic cylinder 45, pivotally connected to an ear 42 welded to a stationary support structure 40-42, and having an extensible and retractable piston rod 48 pivotally connected to a trunnion 49 on the half 12, the cylinder and rod being operated by a motor 52 and fluid pump 53 and positioned perpendicular to the parting line 27, preferably inclined from the vertical, when the tank is sealingly closed. The container, e.g. a ladle 56, may be supported on a platform 55 within the half 11 to which vacuum connection is made via conduits 61, 62.
