Abstract

988,280. Sorting apparatus. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. Feb. 8, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 5269/63. Heading B2H. [Also in Divisions B8 and H1] Apparatus for discharging static electricity from articles of insulating material comprises a perforated support plate on which the articles are arranged to slide and means for ionizing the atmosphere arranged beneath the perforations in the support. The ionizing means may comprise a source of U-V light, X-rays, α, # or y rays, or a corona discharge from points 8 connected to a high voltage source. In the apparatus shown, chips of synthetic material from funnel 1 are passed by rollers 2 on to an inclined support 3 having narrow, oblique slots 6 arranged above corona discharge points 8. The chips slide down the inclined support, unhindered by electrostatic forces, and are sorted according to size by means of the stepped slot 5. The support is earthed and may be an apertured plate or a mesh and its under surface may be coated with insulating material so that the discharge will be concentrated within the apertures.
