Abstract
988,203. Rubber spring suspensions. METZELER GUMMIWERKE A.G. May 27, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 21011/63. Heading B7D. The axle 12 of a vehicle is mounted through plate 11 on a pair of members 9, 10 which pivot together on a shaft 17 mounted in a member 3, attached through plate 2 to the vehicle frame 1, a pair of rubber spring members 6, 7 being attached between the members 9, 10 and 3 so that the rubber is loaded first in combined shear and compression and then in compression only as the axle is moved relative to the frame 1. In Fig. 1 spring member 6 is shown in the unloaded condition and member 7 in the loaded condition. The rubber members 6, 7 are bonded both to the members 9, 10 and to plates 4, 5 bolted or otherwise secured to the depending flanges of member 3, which depending flanges together with the adjacent faces of the members 9, 10 may together be either vertical or inclined to the vertical. Shaft 17 may either be secured to the members 9, 10 and pivotal in plain or roller bearings in member 3 or be secured to member 3 and be pivotal relative to the members 9, 10. Preferably (Fig. 4, not shown) the width of the rubber metal spring assembly increases with its distance from shaft 17 to load the rubber uniformly. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6, the members 9, 10 are pivotal in a pair of rubber rings 23, 24 mounted between encircling clips 25 bolted to member 3 and sleeves secured to the members 9, 10 in place of shaft 17.
