Abstract
1,251,328. Rail vehicle suspensions; tandem axle suspensions. METALASTIK Ltd. 4 Nov., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 52109/67. Headings B7D and B7L. [Also in Division F2] A resilient mounting element (see Division F2) employs an annular elastomeric body 64, Fig. 4, located between and bonded to inner and outer rigid members 67, 68 so as to be stressed in combined shear and compression when the element is loaded in the direction A. At least one (as shown both) of the rigid members has a coniform surface bonded to the elastomer, but an end portion 83 of the elastomer is unbonded and spaced from at least one of the rigid members in the unloaded state of the element. In Fig. 4, the right-hand half of the drawing shows the loaded and the left-hand half the unloaded state. The overall characteristic is a spring rate increasing progressively with load, following, e.g., a square law force-displacement plot (Fig. 2, not shown). Fig. 6 shows a road vehicle suspensionthough this suspension system is stated to be applicable to rail vehicles also. In Fig. 6, 60 is an element of the form shown in Fig. 4 and it acts between the longitudinal beam 92 and the load-bearing platform 95. The beam 92 may be rigid as shown or take the form of a leaf spring. The suspension system is such that even when the wheels 90 are on uneven ground the load platform 95 is maintained horizontal, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 11.
