Abstract

Ethylene glycol bis-(b ,b -dimethyl glycidate) is prepared by condensing 2 mols. of acetone with 1 mol. of ethylene glycol di-(monochloro-acetate) in presence of sodium methoxide at a low temperature.ALSO:Thermoset resins are prepared by heating in absence of a cross-linking catalyst and in presence of molecular oxygen at above 100 DEG C., a mixture of a non-ionizable polyepoxide with a polymer or copolymer of an ester of a mono- or di-hydric ether alcohol with an a ,b -ethylenically-unsaturated mono- or poly-carboxylic acid. In a modification, the mixture is replaced by a copolymer of a glycidyl ester of an a , b -ethylenically-unsaturated mono- or poly-carboxylic acid with the unsaturated ester. a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated acids mentioned are acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric, maleic, itaconic, aconitic, and mesaconic. Polyepoxides mentioned are condensates of di-p-phenylol-2,2-propane and epichlorhydrin, e.g. "Epikote" or "Araldite" (Registered Trade Marks); and a polymer of a glycidyl ester of an a ,b -ethylenically-unsaturated mono- or poly-carboxylic acid. When a copolymer of the unsaturated ester is used, the co-monomer is preferably non-acidic, e.g. styrene, and at least 10% of the ester is used, based on the weight of copolymer. The compositions may be applied to wood, stone, concrete, plaster, paper, textile materials or metals, if desired from solution or emulsion, before thermosetting. In Examples, (1) a solution of poly-(b -ethoxy-ethyl methacrylate) in toluene was mixed with various quantities of "Epikote" and "Araldite" resins, films were deposited from the, mixtures and heated at temperatures of 120 DEG 150 DEG and 180 DEG C. (2) Copolymers were produced from mixtures of b -ethoxyethyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst, and dissolved in toluene. One mixture also included methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, and this copolymer was dissolved in xylene and methyl ethyl ketone. Heated at 150 DEG C. the solution yielded films. (3) Films were cast from solutions of poly-(b -ethoxyethyl acrylate) in xylene-methyl ethyl ketone mixture, dried and baked at 150 DEG C. Poly-)methoxybutyl methacrylate) and poly-(diethylene glycol monobutyl ether methacrylate) are also referred to as suitable polyesters. (4) Films deposited from a toluene solution of a copolymer of b -ethoxyethylmethacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, styrene and ethyl acrylate were baked at 150 DEG C. (5) Mixtures of varying proportions of b -ethoxyethyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate were copolymerized in emulsion with potassium persulphate. The emulsifiers are specified. One of the mixtures also contained methyl methacylate. Films deposited from the copolymer emulsions were dried and insolubilized at 150 DEG C. (6) An emulsion of poly-(b -ethoxyethyl methacrylate) was mixed with an emulsion of a copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate and styrene, and used for making films which were stored at 150 DEG C. The emulsifiers used are specified. (7) A film of mixed ethylene glycol bis-(b -b -dimethyl glycidate) and poly-(b -ethoxyethyl methacrylate) was stored at 150 DEG C.
