Abstract
Copolymers are prepared by polymerizing in the presence of a polymerization initiator and an inert solvent a mixture of (a) an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or an anhydride or an acid ester thereof, (b) an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid amide, (c) styrene or a substituted styrene and/or a neutral ester of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or vinyl chloride and/or vinyl acetate, and reacting the product so obtained by heating with formaldehyde and/or a formaldehyde-yielding compound or composition and simultaneously with a monoepoxide, in the presence of a tertiary amine and/or a quaternary ammonium compound. Component (a) may be, for example, acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic or aconitic acid or an anhydride thereof or an acid alkyl ester of the aforementioned polycarboxylic acids; component (b) may be an amide of the acids mentioned for (a) as well as of ethacrylic or phenylacrylic acid; component (c) may be a -methyl-styrene, vinyl toluene or a ring-substituted halostyrene or a neutral ester, an aforementioned acid with an alkanol or a glycol. Substances which yield formaldehyde include aqueous or alcoholic solutions of paraformaldehyde, trioxane and hexamethylenetetramine. Propylene and ethylene oxide are exemplified as monoepoxides. Suitable polymerization initiators include azodiisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, t-butyl peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide; the peroxides may be used together with reducing agents, viz. lauryl or dodecyl mercaptan or thioglycollic acid. Polymerization may be effected using a xylene/n-butanol or n-butanol/butylene glycol mixture as solvent. There may be added to the copolymer products, which may be diluted with water, 10-40% melamine- or urea-formaldehyde resins which may be etherified with, e.g. n-butanol, methanol or ethanol, or 10-30% resin-like epoxy compounds having an epoxide equivalent of from 125 to 1000. The copolymers yield films which can be stoved at 150-180 DEG C. to render them insoluble in aromatic or ketone solvents.
