Abstract

988,162. Tunnelling machines. J. WOHLMEYER. Feb. 11, 1963 [Feb. 16, 1962], No. 5521/63. Heading E1F. Driven disc cutter units are so mounted in the rotating head 5 of a tunnelling machine that the discs 10, 11, are disposed on at least two concentric orbits k1, k2. Preferably the cutter units of the discs 11 are mounted in frames 16 pivoted at 17 to the head 5 and are adjustable with respect thereto by screws 18 or piston cylinder units so that the radius of the orbit k2 may be varied as required. Forwardly projecting breaker points 22 may be provided on the cutter discs whilst protection plates 21 are provided about that part of the periphery of each disc not engaging with rock. Each unit comprises a cutter disc, a gear train including two or three series connected coaxial epicyclic gear trains housed in a tubular housing 12 and driven by a motor 14. Each cutter pick of a cutter disc is cooled by coolant being passed through passages formed by channels 54 in the wall of a shank-receiving aperture in the disc and the pick shank which is preferably formed of a good heat-conducting material. The coolant is supplied to the picks of the disc of each unit through a closed circuit by a pump driven by the motor 14 of the unit. The circuit passes through an oil cooler associated with the head so that heat can be removed from the coolant by oil which is removed clear of the head to a more satisfactory zone for dissipation. Provided in bores 66 in the pick heads are detonator-fired slow burning cartridges 67, the associated one of which on breaking or wearing of the pick tip occurring is fired to give off gases which can be sensed by an operator or which can in other ways give warning of the need for and shut down of the machine to allow replacement of the tip.
