[Also in Division E1] To reduce hazards from methane occurring in a borehole 11 when boring out coal by a machine of the type having a drill unit mounted on a carriage 2 slidably mounted for movement at right angles to the direction of movement of the mobile chassis 1 of the machine, the or each section 4 of the unit has a tubular shaft 9 of such construction that any gas liberated at the point of the drill can be withdrawn through the shaft or shafts, or can be diluted and dispersed from the borehole by inert gas supplied into the borehole through the shaft or shafts, or can be cooled by cooling medium, such as air or water, supplied through the shaft(s) to or to and from the head.
