Abstract

A process for the production of ortho-, meta-, or para-hydroxy benzaldehydes comprises oxidizing the corresponding hydroxybenzyl alcohol in aqueous medium with oxygen in the presence of palladium catalyst. The hydroxybenzyl alcohol may be substituted in the nucleus by halogen, alkyl or alkoxy radicals. The aqueous medium is preferably made alkaline by sodium or potassium hydroxide and contains boric acid or a borate. In an example carbon black containing 10% of palladium, orthohydroxybenzyl alcohol dissolved in potassium hydroxide to which is added boric acid are placed in a flask and oxygen at atmospheric pressure passed in until absorption of oxygen ceases. The product is centrifuged to separate the catalyst and the filtrate, which contains salicylic aldehyde in the form of its sodium salt and sodium borate, is acidified and the liberated aldehyde is steam-distilled and separated from the water by decantation, and the aqueous layer is then extracted with diethyl ether and the ethereal extract is combined with the decanted organic layer dried and evaporated to give a product containing 98.1% of salicylic aldehyde.
