A method of machining hard materials comprises ultrasonically activating an abrasive impregnated probe, moving a workpiece relative to the probe, and supplying a coolant fluid between the probe and workpiece. The probe 4 is mounted in the holder 5 of an ultrasonic generator 1 vertically movable in a guide head 2 under the control of a counter balance 6, which is connected by a cable 7 to the generator, and an hydraulic unit 31 which provides for a slow advance and rapid withdrawal of the probe relative to a workpiece held in a chuck 10. The chuck is of the 4-jaw type and is mounted for rotation on a machine table 11, the chuck being secured to a shaft 17 which is mounted in bearings 18 in a support block 19 and connected by a belt-drive 13 to an electric motor 12. The support block 19 is disposed within a coolant drain tank 20 and coolant is prevented from reaching the bearing by a seal 22 and shroud member 16. The probe may be solid and be impregnated with abrasive, for example, diamond dust, and have flutes or flats formed on its peripheral surface for the passage of coolant. Alternatively, the probe may be formed of a hollow shank 24 having a diamond impregnated tip portion 25. A pair of passages 29 connect the end face 26 of the tip portion to the shank bore 30, which is connected to a supply of coolant, and the peripheral face of the tip portion is formed with grooves parallel to the axis of the shank for flushing away waste particles. For trepanning, the probe may be hollow or a solid probe used with a workpiece rotated in an offset manner. The machine may also be used to form annular grooves and threads by rotating and traversing the workpiece at rightangles to a suitably shaped probe. The material of the workpiece may be hard ceramic such as sintered uranium dioxide.
