Abstract

Aromatic mono- and di-nitriles are prepared by reacting a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon (at least C7) with ammonia and oxygen in the vapour phase at 250-800 DEG C. over a catalyst comprising at least one of Cu, Ag, Sn, U, Th, V, Cr, Mo, W or Group VIII metals or at least one compound thereof. In examples, benzonitrile, tolunitrile, phthalonitrile, isophthalonitrile and terephthalonitrile are produced. Specifications 796,765, 806,492, 867,348 and 874,493 are referred to.ALSO:Exemplified catalysts for the production of aromatic nitriles from hydrocarbons, ammonia and oxygen, wherein the indicated active metals appear to be present as oxides, are: Pt1V/Mo/Al2O3, V/Al2O3, V/Cr/Al2O3, V/SiC, V/Mo/Al2O3, V/Mo/Cr/Fe/Al2O3, V/Mo/Cr/Bi/Al2O3, V/Mo/Cr/Al2O3. The catalyst were prepared by simultaneous and/or consecutive absorption of aqueous solutions of compounds of the active metals on the carrier, followed by calcination.
