Abstract

987,188. Wet coating apparatus. S. D. WARREN CO. March 4, 1963 [April 24, 1962], No. 8554/63. Heading D1L. A method of coating and smoothing a running web comprises passing the web through a coating station to coat a surface of the web, and moving the coated surface into contact with a smooth clean web surface travelling in the opposite direction to the direction of travel of the coated web and urged into contact with the coated surface so as to uniformly distribute and smooth the coating. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 for coating a paper web P comprises a first roll 2, feed roll 6 and third roll 4. The roll 6 provides a metering nip with roll 2 and a pool of coating composition 8 is maintained at the nip. The spacing between rolls 2 and 6 is adjustable and the spacing between rolls 2 and 4 is also adjustable. On leaving roll 6 the coated web PC travels into the nip formed by rolls 2, 4 where it encounters the entering uncoated web P travelling in the opposite direction. The web P removes the excess coating composition and meters and smooths the wet coating on web PC. The web P becomes partially coated in the process. In other embodiments to uncoated web P and the coated web PC are brought into contact between roll 2 and a blade urged thereagainst, between two fixed or rotating guide surfaces and by air blast means. In Fig. 10 two separate webs P and P<SP>1</SP> are employed the web P being coated and smoothed, while the web P<SP>1</SP> is coated. Fig. 11 shows the invention applied to coating and smoothing two webs P, P<SP>1</SP>. The two webs are fed in opposite directions between the nips of roll pairs 80, 81 and 84, 86 so that each web as it enters, smooths the coating on the other web as it leaves. The web P is coated with coating composition 83 at roll 82 and the web P<SP>1</SP> is coated in the nip of rollers 87, 88.
