Abstract

987,077. Controlling lamps. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug.15, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962; Aug. 30, 1962], No. 32294/63. Heading G1A. Lamps LS whose brightness is to be controlled in dependence upon the surrounding luminous density Bu are supplied with voltage from the mains through silicon controlled rectifiers G1 and G2 and have connected in parallel a transformer U3 used to supply a comparison lamp LV which shines on a photoresistor RF2. The photoresistor RF2 is connected in a bridge circuit with a further photoresistor RF1 whose resistance is dependent upon the surrounding luminous density. When the surrounding luminous density Bu increases, the resistance of RF1 is reduced and the voltage applied to the base of a transistor Trs1 which forms part of a differential amplifier DV becomes more positive and this variation is amplified and caused to change the bias of a transistor Trs3 of a phase shift bridge PB in which the output hrs its phase shifted in relationship with that of a transformer U1 connected to the mains as a function of the modulation of the transistor Trs3. This phase shifted A.C. is applied to a trigger TR and when it reaches a predetermined threshold value it causes the trigger to transmit a pulse via the transformer U2 and rectifiers G3 and G4 to the rectifiers G1 and G2. Due to the increase in positive voltage applied to the base of Trsl the time of triggering of each rectifier G1 and G2 is advanced so that the lamps LS receive a current of higher r.m.s. value and thus become brighter. This also brightens the lamp LV and eventually the circuit is balanced. The circuit elements are chosen so that the sensitivity of the apparatus to changes in surrounding luminous intensity closely follows that of the human eye.
