986,988. Friction clutches; clutch control. WILLCOX & GIBBS SEWING MACHINE CO. Ltd. Nov. 14, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 43025/62. Headings F2C and F2L. [Also in Divisions B8 and D1] Means for intermittently transmitting drive to a gear 389 from a sprocket 386, comprises sleeves 392, 396, respectively connected to the sprocket and to a shaft 387 to which the gear is connected, and surrounded by a spring 397 with one end anchored to a ratchet wheel 398 controlled by a pawl 400. As long as the ratchet is free, the sleeves rotate together; when the ratchet is held by the pawl, the spring unwinds as the sleeve 392 rotates and the drive is interrupted. The ratchet has a series of teeth, Fig. 18, and the pawl is rocked by meshing segments 402, 403, the latter connected to a shaft 404 which is periodically automatically rocked.
