The depth of animal tissue is deduced from the travel time of pressure pulses between a transmitting transducer 2 and a receiving transducer 1 after reflection of a boundary of said tissue. In the embodiment described, the received pulses are utilized as bright-up pulses for a cathode-ray tube display 8 on which a circular trace is produced under the control of the time base circuit 9. The circumferential distance of the bright spot from a given datum is thus a measure of the tissue depth and a suitably calibrated scale superimposed on the screen of the tube may be utilized for direct reading of such depth. The transducer probe 1 comprises a housing of plastic material and to prevent interference a screen 4 is positioned between the two crystal transducers 1, 2.
