Abstract

Flavourants are incorporated into tobacco products in a range of 0.05 to 5% by weight in the form of Diels-Alder adducts or their salts, the flavourants preferably being the diene and/or dienophile used to synthesize the adducts and being released only on smoking the tobacco. The dienes which can be employed include (1) acyclic conjugates, e.g. butadiene, alkyl-butadienes, anylbutadienes and conjugated polyenes, (2) alicyclic conjugates including wholly alicyclic systems, bicyclic systems and alicyclic acyclic systems, (3) aromatic conjugates including wholly aromatic systems, aromatic acyclic systems, and aromatic-alicyclic systems, (4) heterocyclic compounds. Compounds which can be employed as dienophiles contain a C=O bond (or one with an equivalent effect) conjugated with a C=C bond. Such compounds are exemplified by (1) CH2=CHA, (2) C6H5CH=CHA, (3) CH2=CA2, (4) ACH=CHA, (5) AC=CA where A represents many specified groups, (6) Quinones. Salts of the above adducts may be employed as flavourants, such as sodium (preferably), potassium, calcium, barium, lithium, aluminium, magnesium or other non-toxic salts. Several examples are given of the preparation of the Diels-Alder adduct to be incorporated in the tobacco and many examples of the diene compounds and dienophile compounds are also given. The prepared compound may be sprayed on to the tobacco.
