Abstract

986,541. Igniting gas burners. R. & A. MAIN Ltd. Sept. 4, 1963 [Nov. 7, 1962], No. 42139/62. Heading F4F. The oven burner 10 of a gas cooker is supplied with gas by a manually operated valve (not shown) and is ignited by a gas jet 26 controlled by a valve 23 and ignited by an electric filament 27, the valve 23 and a switch for energizing the filament being actuated by a push rod 18. A similar gas jet is adapted to ignite the high level grill burner. The push rod 18 extends through a plate 16 in the front of the cooker and is only accessible when the oven door 15 is open. The inner end of the push rod abuts a push button 22 on the end of the reciprocable stem of the valve 23. A head on the end of the stem is adapted to co-operate with a rubber O-ring disposed in an opening between gas inlet and outlet chambers. The switch comprises a contact strip having one end secured to an insulating block; the other end is slotted and straddles the valve stem and is adapted to make contact with the push button 22 on the valve stem when the stem is pushed inwardly to open the valve. The filament may be catalytic and is energized by a battery in a casing 28 secured to the underside of the cooker casing. The push rod for actuating the gas jet of the high level grill extends through the upright back plate on which the grill is supported and the filament is energized by the same battery as energizes the filament of the gas jet for the oven burner.
