Abstract

986,429. Clutch control. SUZUKI JIDOSHA KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Aug. 29, 1961 [Sept. 17, 1960; Jan. 25, 1961; May 6, 1961], No. 31090/61. Heading F2L. The exciting coil 3 of an electromagnetic clutch for vehicles such as motor bicycles, is supplied by a direct current generator 4 driven by the vehicle engine, the coil 3 replacing, or forming part of, the resistance of the usual regulator 6 for the generator. The generator has a field coil 5 connected to a contact arm C of the regulator 6, the arm C being spring biased to engage a contact A, and being actuated to engage a contact B by a solenoid 7 supplied bythe generator. At low engine speeds the contact A is engaged, shunting out the clutch coil 3 and connecting the field coil 5 directly across the generator terminals. With increasing engine speeds the contact A is broken, thus connecting coil 3 in series with the field coil 5. Coil 3 is thus energized, but the current in coil 5 is reduced, reducing the generator output and causing contact A to be re-engaged. The cycle then repeats, the time during which contact A is broken increasing as the engine speed increases, and the amplitude of movement of the arm C increasing, until the contact B is engaged, whereupon the clutch coil 3 is connected directly across the generator terminals. The field coil 5 is, however, shunted out so that the generator output falls and contact B is broken. Arm C may for a time vibrate between the contacts A and B, but with increasing engine speed the arm vibrates between an open position and contact B, the period during which contact B is engaged continually increasing. The exciting current in the clutch coil 3 is thus gradually increased. A resistance 11 may be connectable into the circuit of the field coil 5 to delay the point at which the clutch begins to engage. Alternatively, a variable resistance, adjusted in accordance with an engine throttle control, may be inserted in the field coil circuit. In another modification the clutch coil 3 is connectable to a battery 8 by a governor closed switch. The clutch may be of the magnetic fluid type.
