[Also in Division B8] Foundry sand is simultaneously elevated and aerated and then centrifugally impelled against a baffle member which is capable of positive flexing under the impact of the sand whereby compacting of the aerated sand is minimized. The endless belt conveyer 30, Figs. 1 and 3, carries serrated ledges 31<SP>1</SP> which pick up sand from the bottom 28 of a loading hopper 12 and discharge it from the top curve against a rubber cushioning element 15 which minimizes compacting of the sand. The sand then enters the moulder's hopper 16 having a discharge shoot with a gate 46 operated by a handle 45. Alternatively the sand may be directed into a receptacle for storage or on to a conveyer. The loading hopper 12 may be supplied with sand from a mixer unit. A spill housing 14 is mounted beneath the belt, with a removable clean-out section 41. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8, the cushioning element comprises a flexible metal baffle plate which is adjustable by means of a stop 150 to control the direction of the sand discharge, which may be directed into a hopper 116 with two outlets 116a, 116b. Louvres 210 may be opened to allow excess sand to re-enter the hopper 112 to prevent overloading of the conveyer. A deflector 160, Fig. 10, is mounted between the belt runs to direct sand falling from the upper run away from the belt-supporting roller 133, and deflectors comprising rubber mats, Fig. 12 (not shown), shield the roller bearings from falling sand. The lower end of th spill housing 114, Fig. 13, is so constructed as to present no sharp corners in which build-up of sand may commence, and the discharge opening 205 of the hopper 112 may be varied in size by adjustment of the plate 200.
