Abstract

986, 399. Measuring earth resistance. EVERSHED & VIGNOLES Ltd. Nov. 28, 1962 [Dec. 5, 1961], No.43521/61. Heading G1U. An earth resistance measuring instrument includes a battery powered electric motor 5 connected to a mechanical current converter 10 having its input connected to receive direct current from a battery 6 and its output connected to supply alternating current to an earth circuit X under test. The electric motor is operated from the same battery 6 and contains a switch 7 and a rheostat 8 in its energizing circuit. Altering the resistance 8 will alter the motor speed and hence the frequency of the output alternating current. A suitable circuit for carrying out the resistance measurement which may be incorporated in the instrument includes a transformer 20 which supplies the A.C. power to the test circuit, and a transformer 21 which supplies the input A.C. to a resistor 22. The output voltage developed across the unknown earth resistance X is compared with that developed across the resistor 22 and the difference supplied to a mechanical rectifier also connected to the motor shaft to produce a D.C. which is supplied to the galvanometer G. The resistance 22 is adjusted until a zero reading is obtained in the meter and its value is then related to the unknown value of X. The apparatus of the invention replaces conventional types containing a hand-driven direct current generator. Specifications 688, 995 and 963,374 are referred to.
