Abstract
986,246. Mixing fluids in conduits. MONSANTO CO. June 24, 1963 [June 25, 1962], No. 24994/63. Heading BIC. [Also in Division B5] In a device for mixing liquids, a first liquid from a source 14 flows through pipe 13 and chamber 12 in housing 11, passing through the grooves 20, Fig. 3, between the flanges 19 of the insert 18. A second liquid from a source 24 flows through pipe 25 to a circular manifold 28 mounted in the housing 11 and encircling the cylindrical central portion of the insert 18. The manifold has a plurality of orifices 29, each of which is aligned with one of the grooves 20 in the insert 18. Hence the liquids join, but owing to their high viscosities and low rates of flow, the flow of the combined streams is laminar and they do not mix. In Fig. 4, area 30 is liquid from source 14 and area 31 is liquid from source 24. A liquid (e.g. a spinning composition) entering at 13 may be coloured by injection of a pigment through the manifold 28, the coloured streams then being fed to a mixer which disperses the pigment in the liquid. As a number of small streams of pigment, rather than one large stream, are injected into the spinning composition, dispersion in the subsequent mixing operation is enhanced.
