900,656. Mixing partial streams. ONDERZOEKINCSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. Nov. 26, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957], No. 38155/58. Class 86. In a method and apparatus of the kind wherein flowing media are repeatedly divided into partial streams which are relatively displaced before reunification so that the surfaces which are reunited are different or are relatively displaced, each of the partial streams formed in the second and any subsequent division contains material from at least three partial streams which have been produced in a preceding division. The shape of each partial stream is altered so that its cross-section is longer and narrower. Fig. 1c represents the inlet end of an apparatus in which the fluent stream is divided into partial streams A, B, C which are broadened in one direction and narrowed in the other and overlapped to produce the outlet arrangement of Fig. 1d; a plurality of such devices may be arranged in series. Fig. 2c shows a sector of a similar apparatus embodied in annular form, the two conduits of Fig. 2c being shown separately in Figs. 2a, 2b. The media to be mixed are introduced to the apparatus as concentric annular streams, see Fig. 5, in which the two streams are supplied through conduits 18, 19 to concentric annular chambers 16, 17 and thence through a flow straightener 15 to a series of fifteen annular mixing members 1. In mixing a pigment with a very viscous liquid by means of the apparatus just described, the pigment may conveniently first be mixed with a proportion of the viscous liquid, see Fig. 6 (not shown), in which the chamber 16 is filled with steel wool to promote homogenization of the pigment mixture.
