Abstract
Methyl chlorosilanes of the general formula (CH3)nSiCl4-n, where n is 1, 2 or 3, are chlorinated in the methyl radical by carrying out the reaction in the presence of fluorine as radical initiator. The amount of fluorine is 3-5% by volume of the chlorine, and an inert diluent gel may be present. The example describes the preparation of (chloromethyl)methyl dichlorosilane, and a mixture of (chloromethyl)dimethyl chlorosilane and (dichloromethyl)dimethyl chlorosilane.
