Alkyl α-haloalkyl ethers are obtained by reacting acetals or ketals of the formula R 2 C(OR<SP>1</SP>) 2 with halosilanes of the formula R<SP>11</SP> n SiX 4-n wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl radical, X is a halogen atom, R<SP>11</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbyl or halogenated hydrocarbyl radical, and n is zero or an integer from 1 to 3. The process may be effected using mixtures of halosilanes, e.g. the mixture of halosilanes and organohalosilanes obtained by reacting silicon with alkyl or aryl chlorides, or the distillable residues obtained as by-products in the preparation of chlorosilanes by reacting silicon with methyl chloride.
