[Also in Division F1] An hydraulic transmission comprises a piston-and-cylinder type pump or motor and a vane-type motor or pump having axially slidable vanes. The vane-typeunit, a developed view of which is shown in Fig. 4, comprises a rotor formed by a bush 3 secured to side members 4, 5 by tie rods 6 and fast with a driving or driven shaft 1, 1<SP>1</SP>. The side mem bers 4, 5 are mounted in a stationary housing 9 in which vanes 10 are axially slidable, the vanes 10 having sealing strips 12 at each end which are pressed by springs 13 into engagement with surfaces 7, 8 of the side members. The surfaces 7, 8 have a sinusoidal form and co-operate with the vanes to form chambers 15, 16, the chambers 15 communicating through passages in the housing 9 with a cylinder of the piston and cylinder unit, and the chambers 16 communicating with a second cylinder of this unit. The vanes 10 are formed with pins 14 engaging a sinusoidal groove in the bush 3 to impart axial movement to the vanes as the rotor is rotated so that the sealing strips 12 are relieved from the duty of imparting reciprocation to the vanes. In operation as the piston in the cylinder connected to the chambers 15 moves to increase the pressure in these chambers, the other piston will move in the opposite direction to transmit torque. In order to substantially balance the tilting moment exerted by pressure on the exposed sides of the vanes, passages lead from each side of a vane at each end to the opposite side slightly inward of the end and terminate in grooves 17, the pressure in which reacting against side walls of the slots in the housing 9 in which the vanes are housed counteracts the effect of pressure on the exposed end of the vane. In a modification the pins 14 and the co-operating guide groove in the bush are omitted, and the end of the vanes are so shaped that they contact the surfaces 7, 8 to reciprocate the vanes independently of the sealing strips 12.
