Abstract
Refractory bodies are produced by firing a mixture of flake graphite, silicon carbide and silicon and/or ferrosilicon bonded with a hardenable organosilicon binder, e.g. an alkyl silicate ester such as ethyl silicate. Proportions specified by weight are 10-40% flake graphite, 30-80% silicon carbide and 5-50% silicon and/or ferrosilicon and 25-50 parts of binder per 100 parts of the mix. The mix may also include up to 1% by weight of a fluorine containing material, e.g. fluorspar, cryolite or topaz, up to 5% by weight of borax, boric acid, glaze frit or similar glassy material and up to 10% by weight of fine carbon. The firing may be carried out under a non-oxidizing nitrogen atmosphere and may be carried out by either heating at 1150-1350 DEG C. for about 24 hours followed by a rapid increase, to 1400-1550 DEG C. for 15-30 minutes, or by heating at 600-700 DEG C. for 60-90 minutes followed by a rapid increase to 1400-1550 DEG C. for 5-30 minutes.
