Abstract
The invention comprises 3-pyrazolidones of the formula <FORM:0985653/C2/1> where R4 is a pyridyl or pyrimidyl group and R5- 7 may be the same or different and are hydrogen, or an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms. R5- 7 can be, e.g., a methyl or ethyl radical. The compounds may be prepared by known methods, e.g. those of Specifications 542,502, 703,669 and 728,368. The preferred methods are those in which a hydrazine of the formula R4NH.NH2 reacts with (a) an ester R5R6C = CR7CO2R8, where R8 is a hydrocarbon group, (b) an amide R5R6C = CR7 CONHR8, or (c) a nitrile R5R6C = CR7CN and subjecting the 3-iminopyrazolidone to hydrolysis. The compounds are photographic developing agents (see Division G2) for silver halide emulsions at pH values greater than 9.5. Examples describe the preparation of, e.g. 1,21-pyridylpyrazolidin - 3 - one hydrochloride, 1 - (4,6-di methyl - 21 - pyrimidyl) - pyrazolidin - 3 - one and 1 - (6 - methyl - 21 - pyridyl) - pyrazolidin - 3-one hydrochlorides and 4-methyl-1-41-pyridylpyrazolidin-3-one.
