Abstract

A lubricant composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil together with both a liquid chlorinated polyolefine having a molecular weight below 500 and a chlorine content of from 30 to 50% by weight of the chlorinated polyolefine, and a proportion of a chlorinated petroleum wax. The ratio of chlorinated polyolefine to chlorinated wax is preferably at least 2 : 1, and preferably the two additives together amount to 2-15 weight per cent of the total composition. The composition may also contain a sulphurized mineral or fatty oil, and an emulsifier, e.g. alkali metal petroleum sulphonate, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal soap of a naphthenic or rosin acid, or a non-ionic emulsifier. Other optional additives are fatty oils, fatty acids, esters, alcohols, polyglycols and their esters, phenolic compounds and polyhydric alcohols, specific mention being made of polyglycol esters of oleic acid, dioleyl malate, and condensation products of nonyl phenol with ethylene glycols. The lubricants are useful as cutting oils and may be emulsified with water, e.g. 10% of oil to 90% of water.
