Abstract

A composition comprises, by weight, 100 parts of butyl rubber, 70 to 175 parts of carbon black, and 25 to 130 parts of softener, said carbon black being characterized by an Electron Microscope (E.M.) surface area between 90 and 150 m2/g, a Nitrogen Adsorbtion (B.E.T.) surface area between 75 and 170 m2/g, a ratio of B.E.T. to E.M. surface areas not exceeding 1.4:1, a Structure Index not exceeding 90 and a volatile content of at least 1% by weight, of which at least one-third by volume is CO2, the proportion of softener being between 12 and 20% the total weight of the composition. The special carbon blacks may be made by treating certain blacks with ozone (Specification 947,261) or attriting blacks in a ball mill optionally in the presence of an alkate or alkaline earth metal compound.
