Abstract
985,353. Making patterns with light beams. GOODYEAR AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 19, 1963 [May 4, 1962], Heading G2A. A continuous pattern is produced on a lightsensitive film by projecting a plurality of narrow light beams on to the film and effecting relative movement between the film and the beams in an endless path, at the same time effecting nutating motion in a direction at an angle to the said relative movement, and developing the film to produce a positive image. As shown,a light-sensitive film sheet 44 is secured to the upper surface of a plate 42. This is positioned on a support plate 16 which can be rotated turntable-fashion by a motor 22. Above the film sheet is positioned a light-proof box 25 containing a light source 30. In the base of the box, close to sheet 44, is a series of apertures such as the round holes 34, which thus define a series of narrow light beams falling on sheet 44. As the sheet is rotated, these beams trace a series of concentric rings on the sheet. In addition to this circular movement, the template having the holes 34 is also given a nutating motion at an angle to the said movement, so that more complex patterns (e.g. sinusoidal or square wave) may be obtained. The film is then developed to form a positive. From this,a master negative is prepared which is then used to make a contact print on the surface of a slip-ring commutator coated with a photo-resist layer. After development and subjection to an etching process, the rings remain on the commutator as a conductive circuit pattern. Alternatively the pattern may be formed directly on the commutator. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) the pattern can be formed on a cylindrical or conical surface.
