Apparatus for the wet purification and evaporative cooling of hot gases comprises a closed vertical cylindrical chamber 1 provided with an inlet 4 and an outlet for the gases, a coaxially disposed tube 7 mounted in the cylinder 1 forming an annular passage 8 for the incoming and downwardly flowing gas and a cylindrical passage 9 for the outgoing upwardly flowing gas, the vertical chamber 1 being connected to an inlet casing 3 by a transition member 2 of frusto-conical shape tapering towards the outlet, the tube 7 being connected to a cylindrical pipe 11 passing through the top of the inlet casing 3 by a frusto-conical transition member 10, and nozzle supporting racks 12, 13 and 14, 15 for the supply of washing liquid being mounted to extend horizontally across passages 8 and 9. Nozzle racks 20 and 21 may be mounted in the inlet casing 3.
