Abstract
Copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic acid, a monoester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a C1-C12 aliphatic alcohol, and a polyester of said acid are made by initiating polymerization of the acids and monoester in aqueous emulsion at a temperature of 35 DEG to 50 DEG C., and, when the heat of reaction has raised the temperature by 7-10 DEG C., adding an additional quantity of acrylic acid and monoester and also the polyester, the emulsified polymer thus obtained being diluted with water and neutralized. As emulsifiers there may be used gelatin, gum acacia, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and those known by the name "Tritan" (Registered Trade Mark). Polymerization catalysts specified are ammonium persulphate-sodium bisulphite mixtures, which may also include ferrous sulphate. The examples describe the preparation of copolymers of: (1) acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, isobutyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate; (2) as in (1) but using butanediol dimethacrylate as the polyester; and (3) as in (2) but using nonyl methacrylate as the monoester. The resulting copolymers, after neutralization with ammonia or sodium hydroxide, are used as dispersing agents for the preparation of stable suspensions of pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide.
